Scurvy and Pirates

In my Remmington Pirates adventure books series, one of the foods the pirates and sailors (like merchantmen and Navy sailors) will consume is Alfafa Sprouts.

Why?
Scurvy. A common disease among sailors and pirates back in the 16th and 18th century (which 18th century is when my books take place).

Anyways, sailors and pirates lacked something important in their diet (well, honestly they lacked A LOT of important things in their diet), but one thing that I'm focusing on in this blog applies to us today as well.

Signs of scurvy could be: tiredness, muscle weakness, anemia (according to: Scurvy Awareness Day | What is Scurvy? - LimeStrong)

Scurvy is primarily caused from lack of Vitamin C

In 1700s, "Sailors on voyages used to consume lots of vitamin-C rich [Alfafa] Sprouts to prevent attacks of scurvy." (from Jackie Warner's "Lose 10 Pounds in 10 Days")

Alfafa Bonus: because they provide the antioxidant vitamin C it...

              speeds up metabolism
              burns fat

Additionally Alfafa is...
              low in fat
              low in calories (1 cup = 10 calories, 1.3 g Protein, 1.3 g Carbohydrate, 0.2 g Fat)
              cholesterol-free
full of enzymes that speed up digestion
