Sneak Peak time...Book 1's Prologue Part 1

The Remmington Pirate Saga

Prologue

Late 17th century, near Portsmouth, England

The moon glared down onto the three-story Remmington Hall as a tall, lean frame sneaked across the hallway in black, where the moonbeams revealed him slipping into an expensively furnished bedroom. The young man looked around the room, scanning for something. The big bed was heavy with bedding, unlit candles were on every wooden surface in the room, and a big Persian rug accented the room elegantly.
He then rested his eyes on the vanity, and seemed to have found where he wanted to look. He proceeded to look through the drawers.
After what seemed to be endless seconds that had passed from searching, he lifted two necklaces. With a moonbeam directly hitting his back, one pendant was shaped like a square and the other like a teardrop. Because of the shadows, it was hard to identify the colour of either of them.  He seemed to be studying them carefully.
Suddenly there was a sound of feet shuffling quietly.
He paused and looked at the door in time to see a young servant girl walk through the doorway. She paused with fright at the sight of him.
He quickly put the teardrop-shaped pendant necklace around his neck and set the other down, as the three and ten year old girl started to run back out the door. He chased her into the blackened hallway. He rapidly caught her from behind and covered her mouth before she called the guards or screamed. He pulled out a pistol and aimed it at her head.
“Not a single word of me to anyone, or I will find you and kill you,” he threatened. “Is that understood?”
The terrified girl nodded her head, unable to see his face.
“Good.” He pulled the pistol down. “Now, you are to tell your masters that you only heard the thief scramble away. Ok?”
She nodded.
“And just so you know, I’ve got my back covered, if you decide to brave up and call the guards after I’m back on the ground. They will shoot you. Understood?”
She nodded quickly with a look of fear in her eyes. His hand fell from her mouth, and he loosened his grip on her, but still held her loosely.
“Ok, I’m going to release you and I want you to count to…hmm…what do you think? One-hundred? No, that may be too long. How ‘bout thirty? But count real slow…”
He released her and disappeared into the darkness.
She stood still, biting her lip, too scared to see where he went, but did as he had instructed and began slowly counting in her head.

What color do you think the gem is?

Black Onyx teardrop shaped gem

Ruby teardrop shaped gem

Sapphire teardrop shaped gem

And who is the guy that is stealing this gem? And why? Of what importance is it to the story?
